Additional Work-related Residence Permits

Would you like to work, conduct research, study, or start a business in Germany? Depending on your qualifications and goals, there are various work-related residence permits available. Here you will find an overview of key options and the most important requirements.

Skilled Workers with Vocational or Academic Training

If you have a recognized vocational or academic qualification and a specific job offer, you can apply for a residence permit to pursue your profession. Important: Your qualification must be comparable to a German qualification. For regulated professions, you will also need formal recognition of your qualification and, if necessary, a professional license.

Highly Qualified Professionals and Researchers

Highly qualified professionals, executives, or scientists with a concrete job offer can apply for a special residence permit. This usually requires proof of exceptional professional qualifications, relevant work experience, and either a high salary or a comparable leadership role.

Are you planning to conduct research or work at a university in Germany? With a hosting agreement or an employment contract with a research institution, you can apply for a corresponding residence permit.

Vocational Training and Preparatory Studies

If you have secured a vocational training position and have sufficient knowledge of German, you can apply for a residence permit for vocational training in Germany. If you are preparing for university studies or for the recognition of your professional qualification, a residence permit for professional qualification may be an option.

Alternative Pathways to the Labor Market

Work experience instead of a degree: If you do not have a formal vocational or academic qualification but have several years of relevant work experience — for example in high-demand fields like IT — you may be eligible for a residence permit under certain conditions.

Self-Employment and Starting a Business: If you plan to start a business or work as a freelancer in Germany, you can apply for a residence permit for self-employment. Key requirements include a viable business plan, an economic interest or regional demand, and secured financing.
